US Hispanic Marketing

There was sharecropping after slavery and Jim Crow. In the coal mines there was the company store. George Bush’s plan, probably based on his religious convictions and his faith in God, shows us that we have not progressed far as a society. On Long Island, where County Executive Steve Levy and others, and in Houston where the established residents are battling the victims of Hurricane Katrina in the high schools, we see how low people will go. Franklin D. Roosevelt, too, had the chance to permit Jews who were escaping Hitler in Germany the chance to become legal and survive, instead of dying. How could he or anyone else pardon illegal people? It is a hard thing to do when forty Mexicans are living in a house next door to you or down the street. It was a hard thing to do when so many people all across America resented the Jews too.

George Washington made it his business to speak out and protect the Jews. We can see proof of this in the Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island, where the First President of the United States once sat. Truman voted for the State of Israel when it seemed unlikely for him to do. Majorities tend to oppress minorities and that will keep going on under weak leadership. We have to be reminded, however, about how a Republican made a deal with the South to take Union troops out of that area and make the lives of millions of African Americans miserable for almost a century. Although the Democrats continued to dominate the South after that, that domination ended once Republicans moved to the right and eliminated the Solid Democratic South. Democrats and Republicans have contributed to the exploitation of African Americans in the Gulf region, making them poor and powerless.

We have made our bed and we must lie in it. We have no consistent program that can really make the American people great, both productive and generous within our own borders. Sure Americans have great proof of being charitable, worldwide proof, but so many things deteriorate once politics takes over. Be my guest! Be my guest! Be my guest! Sure we know that a guest means that the person is eventually going home. Perhaps George Bush should tax each one of us the money that it would take to send the illegal immigrant home. Let him put our money where his mouth is! That would make sense, but it would topple his government faster than the communists toppled the Czar of Russia.

The American government is wandering in a wilderness of false ideas and may stay there for another forty years. George Bush’s Christian beliefs are more and more reminding us of Pat Robertson’s betrayal of his Christianity when he called for the assassination of President Hugo Chavez. George Bush is no Moses and we know we cannot stay the course because he asks us to, whether it is in war or immigration policy. If you think he has risen to the occasion and you support him, would you act rebellious if peace broke out in Iraq (on its own) and goodwill toward undocumented immigrants seized the day all over the United States? Will hundreds of thousands of people stand up and be counted in each state, as the Danish people once stood up for the Jews, when the Jews were ordered to wear arm bands with the Star of David. The Danish people wore armbands, too, to protest the terrible politics of Hitler. And remember that those times were infinitely more dangerous than our own, in spite of the destruction of the World Trade Center. Is it a requirement that Christians love the guest worker program? I hardly think so!
