Cómo la mayoría de cultivadores del hip hop, y sus raíces el rap y el reggae, usan versos de rimas y juego de palabras. Con esas letras cortas y directas, en las que resalta la percusión, sueñan en escenarios llenos de gente que los aclame.

Como todos, Mr. Joy, otro cantante, encontró la letra de su canción Money en las calles de ciudad. Y entona: “Money /money /todo el mundo quiere plata /por la plata se miente y se mata”. Al final le cuenta a su público que el mejor dinero es el ganado con esfuerzo propio. Otros dan testimonio del infierno que vivieron entre las drogas y las pandillas.

“El hip hop, al igual que la mayoría de cantantes y seguidores de este género, florecen en los barrios urbano-marginales. Talvez por eso ha sido estigmatizado y subvalorado”. Ese es el punto de vista de Katty Ubidia, de la Dirección de Cultura del Municipio de Esmeraldas, que el último fin de semana organizó el primer festival de música urbana.

Por seis horas cientos de personas disfrutaron en la Plaza Cívica de Esmeraldas de esta música que poco suena en radio. “Creo que es un género importante, tomando en cuenta que gusta tanto a los jóvenes. En esa medida éste género debe servir para enaltecer los sueños”, expresa Ubidia. Y ese fue uno de los objetivos. El otro es sostener el trabajo de esta cantera de artistas. Y, en ese sentido, el Departamento de Cultura se comprometió a institucionalizar el festival de hip hop, rap y reggae.

El músico Tomas Prado, de la U. San Francisco de Quito, considera buena esta iniciativa que apoya a los artistas sin recursos. “Este tipo de actos ayuda a crecer a los cantantes populares”, dice. A Prado le impresionaron gratamente las letras de los 20 grupos, dúos y solistas del festival por su mensaje positivo. “Son letras que hablan de las vivencias cotidianas. Son tan elocuentes. Todo muy claro.
No buscan palabra bonitas sino directas”.

Que las letras tengan mensaje. Esa fue una de las bases de la participación. Así, de los 170 grupos que retiraron el reglamento, solo 20 volvieron para considerar sus propuestas. En el festival se calificó el mensaje, la música y la actuación. En realidad fue una tarea complicada para Prado; el animador cultural Juan Montaño Escobar; el abogado Roberto Angulo; y coreógrafa Jéssica Doney, que integraron el jurado.

El grupo Junior de la Cuadra ganó el primer lugar. Es un quinteto de niños de 10 a 12 años que cautivó con su baile y el tema inédita Ven a mí, dedicada a los padres. Ganaron USD 1 000.

“No son una agrupación improvisada, tiene dos años ensayando. También clasificaron recientemente a la semifinal del concurso de los
artistas del futuro, de Ecuavisa”, asegura Elías Cabrera, director del grupo.

El segundo lugar del festival de música urbana fue para Raperos Urbanos, que ganaron USD 500. Y, Alex Mix, que con un rap que fusiona la marimba con el reguetón, se ubicó en tercer lugar. El ganó USD 300.

Pero quizá los premios mayores para los músicos que se destacaron, cantando y rapeando, fue el reconocimiento social y la promesa de grabar un CD de calidad, con el sello del Cabildo.

No hay que olvidar que Esmeraldas, como dice Alex Mix, Elías Cabrera, Charlie T. y Mr. Joy, es una mina de artistas que necesitan apoyo para brillar. “Ese apoyo se debe traducir en capacitación, instalación de salas de grabación y oportunidades”, dicen.

Joshua Llano and Juan Santamaria, who together founded Nitefinders Entertainment, died last June when their car crashed into a pole west of West Palm Beach. Llano, 19, and Santamaria, 21, were two budding businessmen who planned to change college majors--Llano was going to Florida International University for engineering and Santamaria attended Palm Beach Community College for architecture-- to focus on their event promotion venture.

Santamaria said that Canales approached her with the idea of holding the reggaeton concert in Palm Beach County their sons had talked about putting on.

"She said 'Are you with me?'" said Santamaria.

These past few months have been intense with the planning, but putting together this production helped with the healing. "I just want to make everything a reality," Santamaria said.

The two women became close friends themselves, just as their sons had, and said they will plan more Latin concerts featuring salsa, merengue, bachata and other Latin music despite having distinctly different careers. Santamaria is a graphic designer and Canales sells life insurance.

"Now, we are really, really good friends. And because, after the accident, nobody understands exactly how we can feel, but she knows exactly how I feel," Santamaria said, "We are helping each other all the time and talking."

Santamaria said she even listened to the music her son enjoyed to cope with the loss. Both women broke down Friday night as they wrapped up last minute details. On Saturday, a portrait of the smiling friends with arms around one another greeted concert-goers.

The boys were both proud of their Hispanic heritage--Llano was of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent and Santamaria was Colombian-- and they wanted to share that with people of all ages, outside of the nightclub scene, said friend Annam Sayeed.

"They wanted to entertain and bring different artists, not always the club scene," she said, "Everybody loves music no matter the age. . . . I think they just loved people."

The 2009 version will not only reflect the creeping of environmental terms into the lexicon, but also increased recognition of Internet vocabulary.

Years of environmental discourse has pushed terms such as carbon footprint (the negative impact that something (as a person or business) has on the environment), green-collar (of, relating to, or involving actions for protecting the natural environment; jobs) and locavore (one who eats foods grown locally whenever possible) into the word list, where they will be joined by political lingo like earmark (a provision in Congressional legislation that allocates a specified amount of money for a specific project, program, or organization) and waterboarding (an interrogation technique in which water is forced into a detainee's mouth and nose so as to induce the sensation of drowning).

Pop culture get its props, represented in the 11th edition of the Collegiate by jargon that includes frenemy (one who pretends to be a friend but is actually an enemy), flash mob (group of people summoned - as by e-mail or text message - to a designated location at a specified time to perform an indicated action before dispersing), Reggaeton (popular music of Puerto Rican origin that combines rap with Caribbean rhythms) and staycation (a vacation spent at home or nearby).

John Morse, president and publisher of MW’s Collegiate, told the Associated Press that many of the words being added in 2009 have been used for years.

“These are not new words in the language, by any means,” Morse told the AP. “(But) when words like ‘neuroprotective’ and ‘cardioprotective’ show up in the Collegiate, it’s because we’ve made the judgment that these are not just words used by specialists. ... These really are words now likely to show up in The New York Times, in The Wall Street Journal.”

Neuroprotective, by the way, is defined as serving to protect neurons from injury or degeneration, and cardioprotective, obviously, as serving to protect the heart.

Physiatry, the practice of physical medicine and rehabilitation, for example, was first used in print in 1947, but was among the 100-plus added this year. Sock puppet (a false online identity used for deceptive purposes), Shawarma (a sandwich especially of sliced lamb or chicken, vegetables, and often tahini wrapped in pita bread) and Pharmacogenetics (the study of how genetic differences among individuals cause varied responses to a drug) have also been used for decades.

According to Merriam-Webster researchers, one of the words to watch for a future edition is a term used in India among English-speaking Indians: prepone. It is the opposite of postpone, referring to the arranging of an event to take place earlier than originally planned.

In a sense, they’ve already crossed over. “I always defined the term ‘crossover’ differently,” Romeo Santos said during a break. “We crossed over the moment we started playing. We did it with a fusion of bachata, alternative rock, R&B, reggaeton. ‘Spanglish’ words.”

“We added guitar effects, a bit of emotion and different colors in the voices,” said Lenny Santos, who plays guitar and sings. “We had different themes in the lyrics—social issues, sex. They said we were mocking the tradition, but on the street, they liked us.” He called their early music “bachata—with a little New York feel.”

“When I got together with Lenny, my lyrics and his music—it was unique and different,” said Romeo. The song “Dime Si Te Gusto,” which appeared on their 1999 album “Generation Next,” was their first attempt at collaboration. “I had it in my head. I sang it and he played. He did it exactly.”

Henry was the missing piece. He came to the Bronx from the Dominican Republic when he was 13 years old, joining his Bronx-born cousin Romeo, who had begun to work with the brothers Lenny and bassist Max Santos, also Bronx natives. (Romeo and Henry aren’t related to Lenny and Max, and none of the four is related to Antony Santos, the Dominican bachata legend.)

Henry said, “When Romeo sang ‘Cuando Volverás’ in English, I knew it was meant to happen.”

Thus began the slow build. “We didn’t have no plan,” said Max with a laugh. “We just wanted to see a CD of ourselves in the store. We started playing in front of grocery stores, little festivals, restaurants, nightclubs. A lot of things for free.”

“Right away, we clicked with an audience,” Lenny recalled. “But radio didn’t catch on. We were stressing because we didn’t get any play.”

Bachata fans rejected their modern embellishments, but the band was convinced their mix was right, naming their 2002 disk “We Broke the Rules.” “Obsesión,” a single from the album, became the group’s first international hit, thanks in part to New York radio stations that at first had rejected their work.

Two concert albums followed: “K.O.B. Live” and “Kings of Bachata: Sold Out at Madison Square Garden” followed. As the latter’s title suggests, the band played before a capacity crowd at the Garden, their hometown arena. But they’ve sold out arenas in other markets too—five shows at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico, for example, where the tickets were snapped up in a few hours.

On “The Last,” Aventura brought in a few guests to broaden their base. Ludacris raps and Wyclef Jean sings on “Spanish Fly,” in which hip-hop rhythms bubble under bachata sung in English and Spanish. The Cuban jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval plays on “Soy Hombre,” while R&B’s Akon and Reggaeton stars Wisin & Yandel join in “All Up 2 You,” one of two hit singles from the album.” The other hit, “Por un Segundo,” is all Aventura—bachata with a modern, urban twist.

At the rehearsal, congas, bongo and güira create undeniable polyrhythms as Aventura fronts a seven-piece band running through songs from the new disk. The Santos cousins and brothers are dressed casually, much as they were back in the day when they took the 2 train to reach midtown. Lenny is having trouble getting the sound he wants on guitar for a run-through of “Yo Quisiear Amarla”; when he’s satisfied, he plays fluid flamenco-style flourishes and a spiky riff with a thumb pick. Nestled in back, Max’s bass playing is rooted and flawless. As the band tries a version of “Dile Al Amor,” Henry adds a high harmony to Romeo’s lead vocal, then Lenny joins in on the line “I don’t need no love in my life.” The voices are in perfect unison as the song comes to its close.

The digital migration

However the economic downturn does not change the underlying drivers for digital migration and will more likely influence their pace and power and hence the timing of industry change. In short, making it more difficult to hide from the digital migration.

During the period under review, the switch to digital will drive divergences in revenue performance between different segments and geographies. Change will impact the managing of brands, characters, titles and talent across distribution platforms supported by new commercial models.

The case for digital migration, however, will continue to vary across geographies depending on the availability of efficient and cost-effective broadband and mobile infrastructure.
