AND THE HEAT GOES ON - On an electrifying night at Madison Square Garden before a sellout crowd, Reggae ton’s. Best showed their wares and took this genre to unheard of heights. The Fast and the Furious Five, Daddy...
Yankee, Tego Calderon, Don Omar, Hector El Father, and Ivy Queen, confirmed their lofty status as the A-list of Reggaeton music. Yet the show had more than it’s share of surprises and highlights.
Starting from the top, the Boricua Yankee who bills himself as “El Cangri”, busted out of a large black box swinging away with a baseball bat clothed completely in black with his shirt emblazoned with the words "The King of New York”. He introduced his latest hit “Rompe” along with favorites such as “Gasolina”. Yet his freesylin’ ability was put fully to the test as he closed out the show with surprise guest, producer and rapper, Pharrell Williams, of the Neptune’s. They performed a duet to the song “Mamacita”.
The main rival to Yankee status was Don Omar who performed the most hits and had to overcome the crowd who sang his songs in unison mostly drowning out Omar. At one point he stopped and left the microphone out as the throng continued his lyrics. The screen above him proclaimed him “King of Kings” and his performance on this Thanksgiving night confirmed him as the “Rey”.
Tego Calderon, performing for the first time in two years, threw out his unique comfortable down-to-earth flow as he was serenaded with the calls of “TEGO TEGO TEGO”. A Mexican contingent even had a colorful banner claiming Tego as King. A memorable moment was a duet Tego did with Don Omar to the song “Los Bandeleros”.
Ivy Queen, the lone female elite artist on the bill showed why she has been dominant for a decade. Her deep voice elucidating her fabulous flow and re-do of many favorites added to her luster as the women responded all-out to the “Queen of Reggaeton”.
Hector Bambino who came out to a video showing a gang chasing him by car and foot after a bag of money he had. His recent affiliation with Jay-Z should give some valuable exposure to American audiences who got a taste of his power lyrics and sounds.
A cute moment during the performance by Angel and Khriz to their song “El Bailando”, when a young child came out in a Spiderman costume moving to and singing their lyrics. Other artists who gave incredible depth to this card included Alexis and Fido, Noztra, Julio Voltio, Adazza, and John Eric.
The duos of Wisin and Yandel and Zion and Lennox were noticeably absent and would have made the roster of All-Stars complete. The announcing of Alex Sensation made the intermissions along with DJ Wreck and Mas Flow a club experience. The production value of the show can be attributed to the genius of Ralph Mercado and Felix Cabrera of MCM, (Mercado Cabrera Music)As coordinator Debbie Mercado commented on this evening, “Never has their been this much quality talent under one roof. It was a sold-out event and the artists were all on their game making this one of the landmark concerts in history.” Lets not forget the radio station La Mega 97.5 who promoted this event.
