THE DOMINICAN GOVERNMENT has banned seven songs by Puerto Rican reggaeton artistes, saying they degrade women and encourage drug use and violence. The songs by artistes Julio Voltio, Yaviah and Calle 13, cannot be played on Dominican radio or television, or performed or broadcast publicly, the National Commission for Public and Radio Performance said Thursday.

Reggaeton combines elements of hip-hop, reggae, dancehall and other types of Latin music. It has gained international popularity.

The commission announced the ban in a statement signed by commission President Oquendo Medina and board members. Some 50 lines worth of lyrics deemed offensive by the commission were attached.

The lyrics are sometimes explicit and can rely on double entendre and suggestion using Puerto Rican slang. The commission has previously banned other reggaeton songs, as well as videos and singles from other music genres.

Critics have said the agency is a product of an outdated rule from the dictatorship of Dominican General Rafael Trujillo, who ruled from 1930 to 1961, and should be abolished.
