Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu Peru
Travel News.- The Sacred Valley , known as Vilcamayo to the Incas, traces its winding, astonishingly beautiful course to the northwest of Cusco. As a river valley it starts much further upstream to the south and also flows on right down into the jungle to merge with the other major headwaters of the Amazon, but the section known as the Sacred Valley lies just between Pisac and Ollantaytambo. Standing guard over the two extremes of the Sacred Valley road, the ancient Inca citadels of Pisac and Ollantaytambo hang high above the stunning Río Vilcanota-Urubamba and are among the most evocative ruins in Peru. Pisac itself is a small, pretty town with a Spanish gridded street plan just 30km from Cusco, close to the end of the Río Vilcanota's wild run from Urcos. It's easily visited in a morning, maybe checking out the market before taking a colectivo on to Ollantaytambo by lunchtime.
Further downstream are the ancient villages of Calca , Yucay and Urubamba , the last of which has the most facilities for visitors plus a developing reputation as a spiritual and meditative centre, yet it retains its traditional Andean charm and has a bustling market and one or two good eating houses. At the far end of the Sacred Valley, the magnificent ancient town of Ollantaytambo is overwhelmed by the great temple-fortress clinging to the sheer cliffs beside it. It's a very pleasant place to spend some time, perhaps taking a tent and trekking off up one of the Urubamba's minor tributaries, or joining up with the Inca Trail for Machu Picchu.
