What does Cancun mean? Nest of birds! Nest of snakes! Nest of thieves? Nest of iguanas? See below for the answer.

Ride up and down the main street in between the Gulf and the lagoon for about sixty-five cents. You will see many Americans doing it and the ride was always fast. You can take the long ride downtown or get off in the midst of wonderful restaurants, bars, and flea markets. Those buses sometimes have the names of key areas of interest listed on the front.

Walk along the beach and see the damage done by last hurricane. See the new construction going on as Cancun comes back from only 7,000 rooms to approaching the 27,000 rooms it had. Stay on one of the most beautiful beaches and enjoy the beautiful blue water. Watch out for the crocodiles in the lagoon. I saw one at night from the terrace of an Italian restaurant.

I had a wonderful variety of food, mostly Mexican, including tacos, fajitas, and mole poblano. The grilled Gulf shrimp were great. The beers (cervezas) I enjoyed included Dos XX, Modelo, Corona, and Monjero. You can see and get a tour of a distillery where tequila was produced in the Destileria, a restaurant.

If you do not see much of sea life you can take the underwater tour at AquaWorld. We saw sea turtles, fish, including barracuda, and plants. There is a boat that takes you to the underwater touring ship and the whole trip takes about an hour and a half.

Chichén Itza is a long drive outside of Cancun. We left around 7:30 by bus in the morning and arrived at a market to stop and make purchases well after 11 A.M.. The ruins are magnificent. They seem to be everywhere. Please note that we were not allowed to climb the pyramid there and it is now forbidden to do that. We were asked to clap our hands to hear the echo. The sound travels to the walls and a pinging noise is made. All of this was made possible by the architects who designed that ancient Mayan city. You can see the observatory where Mayans observed the solar system. Keep in mind that their calendar was more accurate than the calendar in use in Europe. The tour included breakfast, lunch, and drinks and we were taken to a cenote in a cave for a quick refreshing swim before returning back to Cancun.

This was my first trip to Cancun. Playa del Carmen will probably be next. Nest of snakes wins! MARTIN N. DANENBERG www.ahorre.com/ged
