Puerto Ricans Are Poorest Latino Group
05/2004 Puerto Ricans have the highest poverty rate of any Latino group in the United States, the New York Daily News reported.
An analysis of census data by the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund found that of the 3.2 million Puerto Ricans in the 50 states, 26 percent live in poverty -- roughly three times the national average. Puerto Ricans, unlike other Latinos, are citizens by birth.
"Everybody says, 'The key to success is to become a citizen,'" said César Perales, president of PRLDEF. "But when you look at the Puerto Rican situation, you can't help but question the meaning of citizenship," for social and economic advancement.
The analysis also shows that unemployment among Puerto Rican men also ranks highest compared with other Latino groups and is almost twice the national average of 6.2 percent.
Puerto Rican families also make some $5,000 less than the average Latino household. Almost half of the single-parent homes are headed by women and are impoverished.
