Puerto Ricans New Latino Identity
A recent article was written by Maite Junco. This article reflects on the Identity change the Puerto Rican community has taken. Recent 2000 census indicates a change (+/-) in Puerto Rican population across certain markets. So as the shift reflects less Puerto Ricans and growth from other countries ( Dominican Republic, Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico) Hispanic market budgets are being allocated accordingly.
This point has become quite visible in the New York market. The 1990 census showed that the Puerto Rican community represented as much as 47% of New York's Hispanic market. The Puerto Rican community were pioneers in the eastern half of the United States. Though New York currently houses 2.2 million Puerto Ricans, it seems there is a struggle for acknowledgement of efforts and budgets.
In California, the Mexican community ( Ceasar Chavez "Si Se Puede") paved the way for the latinos. In the east coast, the Puerto Rican community broke all barriers.
