Assemblyman Peter Rivera Mental Health Education

By Martin Danenberg - Depression and mental illness are affecting the education of youth all over New York State.  Many young people are dropping out of school because of this. GED is so critical to a large percentage of them.  Latino youth feel hopelessness in their lives.

There has also been a great increase in depression and suicide among college students.   Governor Pataki has presided over a state that is below the national average in GED’s granted to people who need the diploma, and I assume that is below the national average in helping people get a GED who have mental illnesses.  The investment in GED has not been sufficient.  Even in the great jump in 2001 because there was a rush to take an easier version of the GED test, New York State had no jump.  Instead of 35,000 graduates that year we should have had 45,000 and a greater number of GED graduates being treated for mental illness among them.

Assemblyman Peter Rivera has developed a great interest in mental health and this is one area of great concern in the Hispanic community.  One in five Latinas suffers from suicidal thoughts and mental health will be taught in the schools in New York State soon.  The Commissioner of Mental Health, Sharon Carpinello, pointed out that this is a “billion dollar industry” in order to show the impact on our society.  She also urged parents of college students to ask their children about their mental well being while they are attending college.

Assemblyman Rivera mentioned that Abraham Lincoln suffered from depression, but unlike so many others, he was able to accomplish great things even though he had this illness. Rivera looks forward to the day when all people who suffer from this illness can function well and achieve great things.  He has made a great commitment.

AN AGGRESSIVE GED CAMPAIGN IS NEEDED IN NEW YORK STATE NOW!
